BSkyB appoints Andy Brent as brand marketing supremo

BSkyB has appointed former Burger King executive Andy Brent as its group brand marketing director.

The appointment of Brent brings to an end the six-month hunt to replace its former director of communications and brand marketing, Matthew Anderson.

Brent will report to BSkyB chief executive Jeremy Darroch and take a seat on the company’s executive committee but, unlike Anderson, he will not also be responsible for BSkyB’s communications operation. He will join the company on October 1.

BSkyB director of brand marketing Robert Tansey, marketing director of Sky Networks Alex Lewis and Christian Cull, the director of customer communications, will all report to Brent.

“The Sky brand is a critical factor in our growth,” Darroch said. “Its strength has allowed us to reach out to new customers and to enter new product categories and we see a substantial opportunity for further growth.”

Prior to that he was chief marketing officer at Burger King International, having begun his career with a 13-year stint at Procter & Gamble.

In March Anderson, who joined BSkyB in 2005 from Ogilvy PR, left to follow the satellite broadcaster’s former chief executive James Murdoch to Wapping to become director of strategy for News Corporation’s European and Asian operations.

Murdoch, the News Corporation chief executive for Europe and Asia and BSkyB chairman, is still on the hunt for a board-level marketing chief with overarching responsibility for News International’s portfolio of brands.

Following Anderson’s departure BSkyB handed his corporate responsibilities to Graham McWilliam in the expanded role of group director of corporate affairs.
