Scottish Courage to cut city jobs in marketing shake-up
SCOTTISH Courage, the beer retailing division of Edinburgh-based Scottish & Newcastle, is to restructure its marketing arm with the loss of 15 jobs this month.
A company spokesman insisted the move was not a cost-cutting exercise, but was aimed at increasing “marketing effectiveness” at the group, which brews John Smith’s, Miller, Kronenbourg and Beck’s beers.
He added: “Across our marketing community, we employ around 160. They market our products to our trade customer and also to individual consumers. We are now aligning the two functions .”
He said the job cuts will be spread throughout the UK, but are likely to focus on Scottish Courage’s two main offices in Edinburgh and Staines, Middlesex. “If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say between eight and ten jobs will be lost in Edinburgh,” the spokesman said.
“But the important point to stress is that, wherever possible, we’ll look to redeploy staff or seek voluntary redundancies to achieve these numbers.”
Scottish Courage was recently voted advertiser of the year, thanks to its John Smith’s campaign featuring the comedian Peter Kay, but the spokesman insisted : “This is not about changing our marketing strategy, because that’s very successful .”
